Sambar - Lentil Soup
 
Ingredients

Sambar also known as lentil soup, is a good source of vitamin A,C,Iron and Fiber with less carbohydrates and no Cholesterol

Red gram – 1/2 cup
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
shallots/Red onions chopped – 1 tbsp
Fenugreek seeds – A pinch
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Chilly powder - 1 tsp
Coriander powder - 2 tsp
asafoetida - 1/2 tsp
Salt – As reqd
Tamarind water-1/4 cup or as required

Vegetables:
Drumstick – 2 nos
Carrots – 2 nos
potatoes – 2 nos
Tomatoes – 2 nos
Okra – 4-5 nos
red onion -1 no.
Snake gourd -3/4 small pieces

 

 

Method:

1)Cook the red gram in a pressure cooker along with ¼ tsp turmeric powder and the required quantity of water.
 
2)In another pan cook all the vegetables with sufficient water .When it is done add the cooked dal, asafoetida and salt.Mix well.

3)Now add the chilli powder,corriander powder and the tamarind water.Let it boil and then simmer for 3 minutes.

4)Heat a pan and splutter mustard seeds, fenugreek, and jeera.Add chopped shallots or onions ,red chilli and curry leaves. When the sambhar thickens pour this seasoning and remove from heat.
